Township Roads

Paved and Gravel Roads

Hamilton Township has approximately 36 miles of gravel roads. Hoover Avenue and Rodgers Road are the only paved roads running north and south, and Townline Lake Road is the only paved road running east and west.

These roads, plus portions of the Springwood Lake and Dodge Lake subdivisions, are maintained by the Clare County Road Commission. Most roads in the Dodge Lake subdivision are maintained under contract and funded through an annual assessment.

Road Improvements

In prior years, the Clare County Road Commission funded improvement projects at 50 percent. State funding to the Road Commission has since been reduced. Typical work includes tree removal, ditching, and applying six inches of compacted gravel. The estimated cost to re-gravel one mile is approximately $26,000.

Residents who wish to discuss road conditions may contact the Township Supervisor or the trustees listed on this page.

Road Committee

The Road Committee monitors township roads and identifies areas needing improvement.

Brining of Gravel Roads

The Township Board has contracted with Michigan Chloride Corporation to apply heavy calcium chloride to gravel roads. Vehicle traffic packs the treated surface and helps control dust; rain following an application can assist the packing process. A township-wide application has cost approximately $13,000.

Voters approved a three-year road-maintenance and improvement millage on the August 2, 2022 primary ballot. The first funds were collected with the 2023 winter taxes and support brining and other road projects.

Dodge Lake Private Road Maintenance

The Clare County Road Commission maintains the paved roads in Dodge Lake, Swallow Street, and the roads south of Swallow. All other roads are considered private and are maintained under contract.

Keysor Excavating has performed private-road maintenance since 2010. The contract covers grading, snow plowing, brining, and additional gravel. Brining is normally applied before Memorial Day and again in August.

A Dodge Private Roads meeting is held each July. Dodge Lake residents are encouraged to attend to discuss maintenance, assessment amounts, and committee appointments.
